Headteacher
Stopsley High School

Karen Hand

Karen became Headteacher of Stopsley High School in June 2021, where she has led a significant organisational turnaround, securing a move from Requires Improvement to Good within just over a year through a clear focus on culture, accountability, and high quality teaching.

Karen began her career as a Science teacher and NQT in July 2006 after graduating from King’s College London with a degree in Chemistry, later progressing through a range of senior leadership roles at The Compton School, including Deputy Headteacher for both pastoral provision and teaching and learning.  Her leadership experience spans curriculum design, assessment, behaviour and attendance, safeguarding, and system wide improvement.

Karen has extensive experience in developing leadership at all levels, supporting schools through collaboration, coaching, and evidence informed practice. She has worked across networks of schools delivering improvement programmes, pupil premium reviews, and leadership development initiatives, and is an experienced Challenge Partners reviewer.

Beyond her school leadership role, Karen contributes to the wider education system as Co-Chair of Governors of a secondary Pupil Referral Unit and as a governor of a primary school, maintaining a strong understanding of cross phase priorities and challenges.  She is also engaged in national work focused on data and accountability through her involvement with the Department for Education’s Star Chamber Scrutiny Board.
